I started cosplaying in 2007 when I was invited to give a talk on magical girls at my local anime convention. I dressed as the spider lady from xXxholic and I was hooked.
Over 15 years later I have MC’d, judged, volunteered, and competed at conventions around Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.
My cosplay costumes are all self made. I am drawn to characters who feature in both popular culture and older Japanese literature or myth and legend.
I try to incorporate historical or couture garment construction techniques into my work which means that my costumes from the last decade can still be displayed and worn. I often use antique and vintage kimono silk and kimono stitching techniques in my work - but I also dumpster dive through my friends’ konmari fabric discard piles.
