Accommodation

There are a range of options to suit your budget.

I suggest staying in the suburbs of Hobart, South Hobart, Battery Point, or Sandy Bay – especially if you won’t have a car and will be relying on public transport or taxi/rideshare.

Shoot locations

MONA – Museum of Old and New Art https://mona.net.au/

Shoot here at your own risk – no professional photography, tripods or flashes and remember to tag them on social media #monamuseum and @monamuseum https://mona.net.au/visit/faqs

TMAG – Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery https://www.tmag.tas.gov.au/home

Shoot here at your own risk – no professional photography, tripods or flashes https://www.tmag.tas.gov.au/visitor_information/planning_your_visit

Royal Botanical Gardens https://gardens.tas.gov.au/

You could actually spend a whole day shooting here in the different gardens - go from dark European forests to formal Japanese gardens and retro futuristic lilyponds. https://gardens.tas.gov.au/visit#map Drones are strictly prohibited https://gardens.tas.gov.au/about/filming-photography

From Monday 28 April until September 2025, the northern end of Lower Domain Road will be closed for TasWater’s pipeline upgrade. During this period the northern entrance to the Gardens will remain closed. Please use the main entrance on Lower Domain Road or lower carpark entrance when visiting the Gardens.

Kunanyi/Mt Wellington https://www.hobartcity.com.au/Community/kunanyi-Mt-Wellington/Explore-kunanyi-Mt-Wellington

Shooting on kunanyi/Mt Wellington. Make sure you check the webcam to see if there’s snow and check for any road closures.

Check what you need to be on the mountain safely: READ THIS GUIDE https://www.hobartcity.com.au/Community/kunanyi-Mt-Wellington/Stay-safe-on-the-mountain

If you are going up in a group, make sure that you have warm clothes to wear while you are waiting to shoot - help each other out and stick to a shooting schedule!

If there is snow, it is likely that the roads will be closed. You may be able to join a tour but it may be necessary to hike in or out. Dress appropriately! Make sure you can add layers and protective boots/gloves to your costume. READ THIS GUIDE: https://www.hobartcity.com.au/Community/kunanyi-Mt-Wellington/Snow-on-kunanyiMt-Wellington

PLAN HOW YOU ARE GETTING UP AND BACK

Suggested shoot locations – Silver Falls/Fern Glade area; O’Grady’s Falls track near the first boom gate off Pinnacle Road. For rocks check the Pipeline Track (accessible via the Chalet); for vast plains and views the Summit is the place to go.

National Parks https://parks.tas.gov.au/explore-our-parks/know-before-you-go

Lutriwita/Tasamania is home to some of the best National Parks in Australia. You will need to purchase a pass to enter these areas and will need to consider your clothing (footwear may need to be washed for example).

Our resident hiker Tessu has prepared this guide for you: Guide to National Parks

Tessellated Pavement and Eaglehawk Neck https://eaglehawkneck.org/attractions/tesselated-pavement/

Roughly an hour’s drive south of Hobart, the Tessellated Pavement has become a popular ICoN spot for show stopping images that merge rock, sky, and water.

Please note - Eaglehawk Neck is home to Port Arthur and much of Tasmania’s violent convict past. Port Arthur is also the site of the deadliest massacre in Australia since Federation. It is recommended that you do not cosplay or shoot at Port Arthur. Absolutely no weapons or military style costumes or uniforms (including fantasy military armour) should be taken into the region.

Salamanca and the Water Front

The old warehouse and drinking district - lots of pubs with stories of sailors and convicts (and ghosts). On Saturday the whole stretch will be closed off for the Markets, but a good shoot option for Friday or Sunday.

Mawson Place and Salamance Square will be your best options for night shoots - make sure that you have helpers and support as these locations are part of Hobart’s main pub and nightlife district.

Sandy Bay UTAS Campus https://www.utas.edu.au/about/campuses/hobart

UTAS is Tasmania’s only university with diverse campuses spread across the city. There will be a ‘hub’ at the Studio Theatre/Communities lounge where you can meet other cosplayers/photographers, stop for something to eat (we’ll have tea and coffee things and there’s a supermarket nearby), and fix your makeup

The Sandy Bay campus actually has some good looking shoot locations, so hang out in the hub and see if you can get an extra shoot or two.

Annotated map

These are some of the main locations used by Hobart photographers and cosplayers. You could spend the whole day based at the UTAS campus or at the Botanical Gardens and still have a variety of shoot locations. You’ll note that the suggested locations are grouped around Hobart CBD and the Sandy Bay UTAS campus.

The Eastern Shore (on the other side of the Derwent River) is also rich in great places to shoot but will need for you to have access to a car.

Remember to work with your shoot partners to plan your weekend (also - please remember that Hobart has pretty abysmal public transport)

Location Exchange

By popular demand, this year we are trialing an open source map for photographers and cosplayers to add their favourite locations, least favourite locations, words of caution, and images as examples.
